Some Hot Weather Energy Saving Tips

As summer approaches, here are a few low cost ideas to save on that energy bill:
  • In San Diego we tend to use a lot of A/C.  Setting the temperature just 5 degrees higher can save you up to 20% on your cooling costs.
  • The wind from ceiling fans can significantly lower the temperature in your home through the wind chill factor.  Ceiling fans use dramatically less energy than A/C.  In fact, most ceiling fans use less energy than a light bulb.
  • Have your air conditioning unit serviced on a regular basis is as important as changing the oil in your car.  It’s something that must be done and if done often, can save you a lot of money.  Have your unit serviced to cut 15% of cooling costs.
  • Seal cracks, gaps, leaks and add insulation to save up to 20% on home cooling costs.
  • Don't try to cool the great outdoors — You remember what your grandfather used to say all the time?”We’re not living in a barn here.”  Keep windows and doors shut and shades closed during the day, to keep your house cool and reduce air conditioning needs.
